NOVEMBER 12, 1993 GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE
COMMUNITY GROUPS
A health alert and a move for the better
by Kenneth J. Kriz
For those who haven't heard, December 1st is World AIDS Awareness Day. One day a year set aside to think about AIDS, to remember those who have died, to fight for the living, to think about what has been done and to realize what has yet to be done.
The AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power (ACT UP) will sponsor a Memorial March and Rally
on December 1st,
1993. The event will begin at 10:30 am as we assemble at Public Square, then at 11 am the
meant to move you from AIDS awareness to AIDS action!
ACT UP. welcomes anyone who would like to volunteer for the March and Rally. Whether you want to help organize on the day of the event or just would like to march to remember a friend who has died, call us
ACT UP
CLEVELAND
March will step-off to the Federal Building at East 9th & Lakeside where the Rally will take place until 1 pm. For those of you hesitant to take part in an ACT UP event, be aware that this March and Rally is being put on with permits from the City of Cleveland as well as a police escort. There will be no arrests!
You see, ACT UP has a plan and we want you to know about it. It is called The Barbara McClintock Project To Cure AIDS and it is ACT UP's detailed plan for an all out research effort to find a cure. The McClintock Project is based on the following premises that are essential for honest, creative and rapid research:
The Project would bring a team of diverse researchers together in one central location in an area with a high incidence of AIDS.
The Project would have two main goals: to do basic research into the pathogenesis.of AIDS and to identify and develop curatives, either new or existing.
The Project would examine all theories about the development of AIDS, not just the current NIH model, and study all affected populations.
In order to assure an honest, objective approach, researchers would suspend all conflicts of interest for the duration of the Project, and be employed only by the McClintock Project.
The Project would have the power of "eminent domain" to ensure that all promising approaches are pursued as quickly as possible.
All curatives released due to the McClintock Project would be made available to everyone, regardless of ability to pay. Could we live with anything less?
If the McClintock Project interests you, then come join us on December 1st at the March and Rally and help support it. The day's events will include information about the Project, guest speakers, a political funeral and, of course, eye-opening street theater

and let us answer your questions about the event. Remember ACTION LIFE, KNOWLEDGE = POWER, it's TIME TO ACT UP! Please, keep in mind that red ribbons are not enough! When the symbol meant to raise awareness turns into the latest lapel fashion accessory for the politically correct, it's TIME TO ACT UP! When the most visible action taken by the government is to issue a red ribbon stamp, it's TIME TO ACT UP! Take direct action to end the AIDS plague, we can't live with anything less. Get involved now to save, at the very least, your own life. Join us on December 1st to remember the dead, to fight for the living, to demand a Project to find a cure and to become one of us who is aware that people are dying and are doing something about it! Public health alert!!
In a continuing effort to keep you informed of the latest AIDS related medical information, we tell you the following; a study reported on in the Critical Path AIDS project newsletter has found a connection between rimming (anilingus) and the development of Kaposi's sarcoma. The data suggests that fecal-oral contact is the main route of transmission of the agent KS in homosexual or bisexual men with AIDS. Protect yourself now! If you engage in rimming, use a dental dam, every time! For more information, please call us. We would like you to be alive to help us in the fight.
